Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Equipment and Instrumentation for the diagnosis and investigation of patients with severe potentially blinding diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): In April 2007, Dr. Teye-Botchway introduced state of the art management of retinal diseases to Bermuda, and simultaneously established a link with the Eye Institute of Lahey Clinic to provide enhanced eye care at the Bermuda Eye Institute by Lahey Specialists (please refer to Visiting Specialist section). The OCT Technology introduced to Bermuda by Dr. Teye-Botchway is a first for the Island.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Leading cause of blindness in patients over 65 years of age in the western world. Risk factors include increasing age, positive family history, cigarette smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, female gender and cardiovascular disease. Nutritional factors and light toxicity also play a role in pathogenesis.

Diabetic Macular Edema
Amongst the leading causes of blindness in the 20-64 year population. Severity worsens with increasing duration of diabetic mellitus. Risk of diabetic retinopathy increases with hypertension, chronic hyperglycemia, renal disease, hyperlipidemia and pregnancy.

Stratus OCT for Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a leading cause of visual impairment in Bermuda. It occurs in a significant proportion of the population over 40 years old. The risk of developing glaucoma increases with age. Open angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma in Bermuda. Risk factors include increased intraocular pressure, race (blacks are 3-6 times more likely to develop primary open angle glaucoma than whites), increased age and positive family history in first degree relatives.

Stratus OCT has proven to be a valuable tool in the detection, analysis, and monitoring of retinal pathology and glaucoma
